Kristian & Kat

Kristian= Insane break dancer, awesome businessman, half Samoan.

Kat = Gets to play with animals all day and gets paid for it, crazy cool personality, and looks just like Flo from the Progressive commercials.

When we told Kat and Kristian we were shooting their portraits in a parking garage, I have a sneaking suspicion they wondered what they had gotten themselves into.  (“We’ll be perfectly safe!” we said. “Cars can go around us!”)  Hopefully they love the final product as much as we do. Cuz, well…we love it a lot.

(Disclaimer: K & K are not engaged…this is not an e-session. Just portraits of two really cool people.)
(No way on earth could I pose like this without breaking my face. Break dancers are cool like that)

After our shenanigans in the parking garage, we decided to wrap things up in a field at sunset….the most gorgeous time to shoot.

And my favorite image of the day:

OneLight Workshop

A few weeks ago (okay, like a month, we are behind in the blogging world) we attended the OneLight workshop with the incredibly talented and amazing Zack Arias.

We spend a long, tiring and INSPIRING 17 hours learning the ins and outs of proper lighting. It completely revolutionized the way we handle our lighting…both in studio and on-location.

Note: All following images are completely SOOC (straight out of camera). That means no photoshop, no tricks, what you see is what you get.

Check this out. The before image is natural light. The second is lit with flash. Amazing, no?

We learned so much…Zack is so legit its not even funny.

hello, beautiful light. I love you, even though you’re flash and I used to be afraid of you and not really understand how amazing you could make my images look.

We have already implemented our new lighting setup, and we are seeing an unbelievable change in our images. Stay tuned…we have some awesome stuff coming up!

[note]: Don’t forget about our Senior Sale, check it out below!

Boston – growing up!

So, remember this little guy?

He is not so little anymore. He is, in fact, right around the corner from being a full-on toddler. How did this happen? When did he stop being a baby and turn into a little boy??
Boston1

Aww. He still melts my heart. He is going to be turning the big 1 in a few weeks, and we are busy planning the big par-tay. Expect photos, naturally.

Attitude? Personality? Nah….he really doesn’t have much of either.

Cans for Comments is done. Over. Finito.

After 8 days of the Cans For Comments drive, we reached 26 comments. yay!

Thats 26 cans of green beans. Or 26 boxes of Mac & Cheese. Or 26 cans of SPAM. (except, probably not) However we decide to divvy it up, its 26 small ways to help.

We will document our trip the the grocery store to prove we are following through, so stay check back for that riveting post. In the meantime, we have lots….yes, LOTS of sessions from November that have yet to see blogging light, so those are next on the agenda.

Hope everyone is having a safe and happy holiday season.  We are so excited for many of the things we have up our sleeves for 2009 and we hope to see you there!

Cans For Comments!

There is a little movement going around the photography world called Cans For Comments, and we are more than happy to jump on the bandwagon!!  (Or CAN-wagon!  Bahaha.)

It’s simple. You comment. We donate a can or non-perishable item to a local food bank for every comment received. You make us feel warm, fuzzy and loved, and someone less fortunate gets to eat. Win-win, no? So comment long, comment short, comment often or only once…just do it! More and more we are hearing of food shelters coming up short this season. This is such a simple way to do a little for someone else! (Oh, and it’s going on for the next 7 days.)

Want to make an even bigger difference? Check out these other photographers who are also participating. (And why not continue to pay it forward and start this on your own blog–photographer or not?)

Life on the Road!! (and a few updates…)

That’s right folks.  We’re back from vacation!  (Ok, we’ve actually been home for a week now.  Don’t judge, we’ve been insanely busy.)

Wisconsin was awesome.  We had such an amazing weekend with our good friend Amy and it was so nice to have a break from everything.  Don’t for one second think that this was a lounge-around-and-do-nothing vacation.  With two weddings, one engagement shoot, and lots of just-for-fun shooting, we barely had a spare second.  We need a vacation to rest up from our vacation!

I know you want to see all the awesome photos we took, right?  All in good time.  Seriously, we have to get caught up first.  (If you’re waiting for your photos from a recent shoot, hang in there.  We’re working hard!)  We’ll definitely be blogging about all of our Wisconsin adventures in the weeks to come, so stay tuned.  For now, sit down, relax and enjoy:

SAM AND AUBREY’S “WISCONSIN OR BUST 2008 EXTRAVAGANZA!”

For whatever reason, the airline people decided to ruin our lives by making it ridiculously expensive to fly from SLC to the airport in Appleton, WI.  (Basically next door to Amy.)  Instead, we decided to fly into Chicago, rent a car, and make the 3+ hour drive to Neenah.  It made for a much longer voyage that should have been necessary, but we saved a couple hundred bucks.  Totally worth it.  Besides, we’re always up for a road trip.

We had an uneventful flight from SLC to O’Hare.  (Except for the guy who started yelling at everyone for touching his computer bag.  He was a jerk.)  We picked up our rental car, a totally sexy Chevy HHR, and hit the road.

Aubrey did awesome as our navigator/map reader/GPS programmer/iPod controller.  Turns out we didn’t even really need our maps.  We borrowed my dad’s GPS and it was totally awesome.  You should get one.

I took the driver’s seat and I am very proud to say that while in a strange and distant land, I didn’t once get lost, wreck the car, or kill anyone.  (Thank you, thank you…)

I’m totally digging the rental.  Doesn’t it look good on me?

I was NOT, however, digging the Chicago traffic.  An insane amount of construction mixed with rush hour is not very fun.  It made I-15 seem like a rural country highway.  The construction on our way home was so bad, that it doubled our drive time. DOUBLED.  It sucked.

Toll booths.  This was something new.  We don’t have toll booths in Utah.  At least none that I know about.

Amy gave us a heads up, so we had plenty of dollar bills on hand.  We were not, however, prepared for the last toll booth of the trip, right next to the airport.  This particular booth only accepted coins and didn’t have a person at the booth.  AND the toll was not $1.00 like all the rest, but only $.80.  Who in the world carries $.80 for a toll booth?  We didn’t not have said $.80 and had to just drive on by.  (Here’s to hoping the Illinois transit people haven’t sent out the hounds to track us down.)

WISCONSIN WELCOMES YOU!  (I know it’s blurry.  All the rules of photography are off when you’ve been traveling all day, are shooting with a little point and shoot, and are speeding down the freeway and therefore only have one shot.)

Wisconsin has lots and lots and lots of water towers.  Seriously.  They were like LDS church buildings in Utah.  They were on every corner.

(We’re thinking of starting a new genre of photography: The Drive By.  What do you think?)

Skip ahead five days and we’re FINALLY almost home.  I say finally not because we wanted to leave Wisconsin, but because our return journey included five states, four airports, and three different airplanes.  (Stupid layovers.  Don’t ever fly from Chicago to Salt Lake via St. Louis and Denver.  It was the longest day ever.)

Well, I’ve summed up the coming and going parts of our trip.  A lot happened in between those two parts and we’ll get to those soon.  (I have to break them up or else this would be the longest blog post in the history of the world.)  We have lots of amazing photos to show off, so keep checking back!

Ok, now for a little business.  If our lack of blogging recently doesn’t explain, let me.  We’ve been CRAZY busy the last few weeks.  Lots and lots of photo shoots, editing, meeting with clients, etc.  Add our vacation on top of that and we’re basically slammed.

Aubrey and I have decided that we need a little breather, so we’ve made the decision to take the month of December off.  With the exception of newborns and possibly engagement sessions for spring weddings, we won’t be taking on any sessions for the entire month.  Don’t worry though!  We still have several spots left in November and we are now actively booking for 2009.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

One more note, we are planning on raising our prices at the beginning of next year.  That includes both wedding and portrait packages.  If you want to secure our 2008 prices, book us now before they’re gone forever!

Leavin’ on a jet plane…

Okay, so its not exactly a cruise or exotic vacation, but we are outta here! We have 2 weddings and 1 engagement session to shoot in Wisconsin, and we couldn’t be more excited!  It’s only for 5 days, no worries. We will be back to full swing next week, with lots of posts of really cute kids, fun families, and the most unique weddings we have shot to date!

Because of the trip, replies to email or voicemail may be a little delayed this week. We will have access to both, however, so we will get back to you as soon as we can!

Wish us luck! (and if you know of anything amazing to see or do in Wisconsin, let us know!)

Vegas, Baby

Aubrey and I just returned from Vegas and wow, it was AMAZING! We attended WPPI 2008 (that’s Wedding and Portrait Photographers International for all you lay people.)
We spent Saturday through Wednesday in Vegas with our awesome photo friends Amy and Kelly.
We had SUCH a blast with you girls!!

Our week was jam packed with some awesome classes, and of course, parties!
Sunday night we hit up the Photography Mentor party at a posh penthouse at Mandalay Bay and then made an appearance at the Celebrity Suite at The Palms for the Pixel 2 Canvas party.

Click here to see some more photos of our adventures.

The Photography Mentor party was awesome and we got to rub elbows with some photography ROCK STARS: Jesh de Rox, [b]ecker, Jessica Claire, and LaCour. It was incredible.

Here’s us with Jesh de Rox:

and Becker:

We didn’t take many of our own photos, but you can check out this and this by the Lovecat herself, Anne Ruthmann

Anne also co-hosted our Monday night adventure with the Pay It Forward Blog. We chilled at the iBar at The Rio for a ROCKING party full of free stuff! I won my own set of Totally Rad Actions and Aubrey won a 16×20 Canvas Gallery Wrap from WHCC!

I actually have a photo of this one! Here’s me and Amy with our new buddy, Phil from New Yawk.

Unfortunately, this was the only photo of mine that actually turned out. It was way too late at night to get anything in focus, as you can see here:

As you can see, I didn’t take this one, so you can’t blame the bad photos ENTIRELY on me.

But apparently, I take a better photo of the casino than of the people in it.

Luckily, there are more awesome people who take better photos than me. Check out the party from Abby’s perspective.

And look! One of our most favorite companies ever, KISS wedding books had another photo booth at the trade show. Naturally, we had to show off their gorgeous albums!
(Note to our clients: We are now offering these BEAUTIFUL, leatherbound, flush-mount albums, so ask us for more info!)

So basically, it was the best week ever. I know I didn’t really talk about anything photography, but the parties are more flashy. We did get some GREAT learning in the classes we attended. Jesh de Rox and Jared Bauman’s presentations were by far my favorite.
It was definitely a great experience and we hope we can do it again next year!!

And of course, there is only one way to spend your last night in Vegas:

Things happen when you "know people"

For how new we are at this whole photography business thing, we sure have gotten some great opportunities already.
Example: Photographing the Miss American Fork pageant a few weeks ago. Jason’s sister Staci was in charge of the whole thing and brought us on board. It was great and we had a blast

A few days ago we were sitting on the couch waiting to go to a family photoshoot. Ten minutes later we were at the high school being hoisted over the football field in the aerial platform on one of the fire trucks!

Turns out, they had just remodeled the field with turf instead of grass and wanted some bird’s eye photos. One of the fire guys brought his point-and-shoot and tried to get the job done. Apparently it wasn’t working so well.
So, seeing as Aubrey and Jason work for the fire department, they knew right who to call.
We got to watch the homecoming game from 100 feet in the air!
Oh yeah. And take photos of the new field.

(I hate to admit it, but we felt pretty important with a huge crowd of high-schoolers staring at us the whole time. Wishing they were us…wondering who we were…how we got to be so cool…)

So who knows? One of our photos could hang in the mayor’s office. Or be printed in the yearbook. Or be put in some time capsule, immortalizing our names.
It could happen.
